Tennis is played on a variety of surfaces, more so perhaps than any other sport. The properties of each surface influence the style of play and affect the quality of performance.
The definition of a hard court surface encompasses many different surfaces, ranging from old-fashioned concrete courts to coated asphalt to wooden gymnasium surfaces to artificial grass similar to AstroTurf. They consist of synthetic or acrylic layers placed above a concrete or asphalt base. These bases, which vary in colour, have a tendency to play quickly because very little energy is absorbed by the surface.
